Chapel Down is Britain's largest wine producer, with more than 400 hectares of vines in Tenterden, Kent—roughly a tenth of the country's total vineyard area. Its first vines were planted in 1977. The company's fizz was served at the 2011 royal wedding. Its chief executive is James Pennefather.
In a 2023 stunt in Reims, Chapel Down offered samples under the guise of "Chapelle en Bas" alongside unmarked Moët—nearly two-thirds of tasters preferred the English variety.
