Nyobolt

An energy-storage company spun out of the University of Cambridge. Nyobolt makes ultra-fast-charging batteries using anodes built from a proprietary form of niobium-tungsten oxide, which allows lithium ions to enter and leave much faster than in conventional designs, increasing the charge rate. Its 35kWh battery, installed in a lightweight sports car, can be boosted from 10% to 80% capacity in under five minutes on an existing 350kW fast-charger, providing a range of around 250km. The company can also produce larger versions. Sai Shivareddy, Nyobolt's boss and co-founder, says its batteries have been tested over more than 4,000 fast-charging cycles, equivalent to about one million kilometres of driving, while retaining more than 80% of capacity.

Nyobolt already supplies batteries for use in data centres, which require fast-charging units to smooth out large swings in power demand. It recently signed a deal with Symbotic, an American firm, to equip its warehouse robots with fast-charging batteries. The company is also talking to vehicle manufacturers.
