American semiconductor company and a leading competitor in connected-car technology.
In June 2023 Qualcomm acquired Autotalks, an Israeli maker of intelligent-transport systems that connect cars with their surroundings, for $80m. In October 2025 China's SAMR announced it was investigating Qualcomm over its failure to report the deal. Although its size fell below the usual reporting threshold, SAMR had stated that the transaction would need its approval. Qualcomm acknowledged that it did not report it. The probe has a dual purpose: Autotalks makes technology for the connected-car industry, which China seeks to dominate, and SAMR had used a previous probe into Qualcomm's attempted acquisition of NXP, a Dutch chipmaker, to gain leverage during the first Trump-era trade war.
In 2025 Qualcomm bought Alphawave, one of the few semiconductor companies listed in London.
