Along with Huawei, SMIC is one of the local manufacturers that Chinese customers must turn to for chip fabrication, since American pressure prevents TSMC's most advanced factories from serving Chinese clients. SMIC faces restrictions on importing the most advanced machine tools, including ASML's extreme-ultraviolet lithography machines, and must make do with older deep-ultraviolet systems.
SMIC makes most of Huawei's 7nm AI chips. In 2026 it plans to double its capacity for producing them.
