Supermicro

American server and equipment-maker co-founded by Yih-Shyan Liaw. The company assembles data-centre servers containing Nvidia chips.

Controversies

In 2018 Supermicro was temporarily delisted from the Nasdaq for failing to file financial statements. In 2024 EY resigned as the company's auditor, citing concerns about its internal controls.

On March 19th 2026 federal prosecutors charged Liaw, alongside an employee and a contractor, with smuggling $2.5bn-worth of AI servers containing advanced Nvidia chips to Chinese customers. Prosecutors allege that Liaw used brokers to order servers on behalf of a "pass-through" entity in South-East Asia; many were assembled in America, shipped to that entity, then repackaged in unmarked boxes and sent to China. To fool customs inspectors, those involved allegedly created thousands of "dummy" servers to sit in warehouses where the buyer claimed to store the equipment. Supermicro's share price fell by a third the following day. Supermicro, which was not named as a defendant, says it has a "robust compliance programme" and is co-operating with the investigation.
