UNAIDS is a United Nations body focused on ending HIV/AIDS as a major public-health threat. It had set a target of ending the epidemic by 2030.
UNAIDS set targets for countries to score at least 95% on three measures: the share of HIV-infected people aware of their status, the share receiving treatment, and the share whose drugs are suppressing infections. Rwanda is one of seven African countries to have reached this benchmark. Malawi scores 95-94.9-94.9.
A UNAIDS report estimated an extra 6m HIV infections and 4m deaths by 2029 if American funding cuts proceed. A survey found 26 of 61 countries responded to the crisis by increasing their own AIDS budgets.
