Alix Fils-Aimé is the prime minister of Haiti. A 54-year-old businessman from Haiti's elite, he became the country's sole leader after the dissolution of the fractious Presidential Transition Council that had been appointed to steer the country to elections. The council had failed in its mission to restore security and hold elections, which are now many years overdue.
Mr Fils-Aimé enjoys the backing of the United States, which gives him an advantage. He is friendly with several people subject to American sanctions for corruption and ties to the gangs. His two main jobs are linked: consolidating security gains and continuing to push back the gangs, and steering a more secure Haiti through its first elections in almost a decade. He cannot run himself but has powerful friends who may, including Olivier Barrau, a banker and insurance titan.
