Bill Cassidy is a Republican senator from Louisiana and a medical doctor who chairs the Senate health committee. He voted to impeach Donald Trump after January 6th 2021, calling the storming of the Capitol "an act of sedition". Since Mr Trump's re-election he has tried to win back favour, voting to confirm Robert F. Kennedy junior to the cabinet despite his own concerns about anti-vaxxers. Mr Trump backed Julia Letlow, a congresswoman, to challenge him in the May 16th 2026 primary, with John Fleming, the state treasurer, as a more radical alternative. The race cost more than $20m in establishment spending. Louisiana changed its rules so only registered party members can vote in primaries, hurting Mr Cassidy, who has limited appeal beyond moderate Republicans.
