Bill Pulte is the head of America's Federal Housing Finance Agency.
In August 2025 he instigated the case against Lisa Cook, a governor of the Federal Reserve, by publishing a letter on August 20th alleging that she had "falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favourable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud". He then tweeted a screenshot showing her signature on two documents. Donald Trump used Mr Pulte's allegations as the basis for attempting to sack Ms Cook on August 25th.
Mr Pulte has made similar claims of mortgage fraud against Letitia James, the attorney-general of New York, and Adam Schiff, a Democratic senator from California. No indictments have emerged in any of the three cases.
An idle mind is worth two in the bush.
