Former mayor of Miami, succeeded by Eileen Higgins in December 2025 after eight years in office. His father also ran for the mayoralty. Suarez is under federal investigation for dubious dealings with developers. The job of Miami mayor is technically part-time; during his tenure he continued to practise law, most recently at a firm where the government of Saudi Arabia is his client. His net worth ballooned while in office.
Suarez courted the tech industry aggressively. In 2020 he replied to a tweet musing about moving Silicon Valley to Miami with a one-liner—"How can I help?"—that went viral. In a few years the city attracted domestic tech start-ups and finance firms, helped by lax regulations and no state income tax. Under his watch nearly 30,000 new businesses opened in six years and Miami's population swelled by nearly 45,000, a 10% increase, between 2020 and 2024.
A great nation is any mob of people which produces at least one honest man a century.
