George Washington

First president of the United States. Washington led the Continental Army to victory in the Revolutionary War before being elected president in 1789.

Presidency

Washington was selected on all 69 electoral-college ballots in the first presidential election, making his election unanimous. John Adams, marked on 34 ballots, became vice-president. Washington was re-elected unanimously — the only two unanimous presidential elections in American history.

Washington proclaimed American neutrality when Britain and France went to war in 1793, chiding both Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson for putting party before nation. Growing weary of factionalism, he chose to retire after his second term. This precedent was eventually codified as the 22nd Amendment to the US constitution.

Revolutionary War

Washington's crossing of the Delaware became an iconic image of the Revolutionary War era.
