Gilmar Mendes is the longest-serving justice on Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (STF).
Mr Mendes holds an annual bash in Lisbon attended by dozens of the most senior politicians, magistrates and businesspeople, many of whom have cases pending before the STF. Dubbed "Gilmarpalooza" by the Brazilian press, the event is organised by a private university founded by Mr Mendes and now run by his son. That university has received funding from J&F Investimentos, the holding company which controls JBS, the world's largest meat-packing firm. J&F had cases pending before the STF at the time of the funding.
The duke had a mind that ticked like a clock and, like a clock, it regularly went cuckoo.
