Leader of Suriname's National Development Party (NDP) and the country's first female president. She previously served as speaker of the National Assembly under both governments of Dési Bouterse. Despite that association, she has remained relatively free of scandal.
Her NDP won 18 of 51 seats in the May 2025 elections, one more than the incumbent Progressive Reform Party. On June 1st 2025 she announced a coalition with smaller parties representing creole, Javanese and maroon communities, giving her the 34-seat supermajority needed to secure the presidency.
