Donald Trump's national security adviser from 2018 to 2019. A traditional conservative hawk, Bolton advocated for the overthrow of the Islamic regime in Iran as the only strategy that could bring lasting peace in the Middle East. He saw Trump's withdrawal from the JCPOA and subsequent "maximum pressure" sanctions campaign as logical steps towards that goal, but says Trump "never got to that logical step" of regime change.
Trump fired Bolton in part because Bolton had publicly called for North Korea to surrender its entire nuclear-weapons programme before receiving American concessions, describing this as the "Libyan model"—a reference that angered North Korea, possibly because after Libya's unilateral disarmament a NATO-led coalition bombed the country, leading to the toppling and killing of its dictator, Muammar Qaddafi. Now a critic of Trump.
It's fabulous! We haven't seen anything like it in the last half an hour!
