Justin Trudeau was Canada's long-serving prime minister. He resigned on January 6th 2025. Under his leadership, the Liberal Party trailed the Conservatives by 25 percentage points in December 2024.
Mr Trudeau's emphasis on identity politics and his treatment of political opponents as morally illegitimate divided Canada and opened the door for the Conservatives, under Pierre Poilievre, to become a protest movement against preachy soft-left politics.
