Miguel Uribe was a Colombian senator for the Democratic Centre (CD) party, Colombia's largest right-wing party. He was assassinated in 2025, in the country's worst act of political violence for 35 years.
Mr Uribe's mother, Diana Turbay, was a journalist and the daughter of a former president. She was killed on the orders of Pablo Escobar in January 1991. Miguel Uribe was four years old at the time.
In 2022 Mr Uribe won his Senate seat backed by Alvaro Uribe (no relation), who founded the CD. He was Harvard-educated and considered a rising star of the Colombian right. In October 2024 he stood where his mother had died and launched his presidential campaign in her name.
On June 7th 2025, Mr Uribe was shot by a gunman while campaigning in Bogota. He was 38 years old. After the shooting he leapt to the top of voting-intention polls. He died on August 11th in a clinic in Bogota. The government of Gustavo Petro blamed the Segunda Marquetalia, a dissident group, but security experts were sceptical. The prosecutor's office was unlikely to conclude its investigation before the presidential election in May 2026. Mr Uribe's four-year-old son was set to start school the week of his death.
Is it weird in here, or is it just me?
