Mike Johnson

Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Israel

On August 3rd 2025 Johnson visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the Jewish settlement of Ariel, and met Binyamin Netanyahu in the settlement of Shiloh, deep in the occupied West Bank. Using the biblical terms for the territory, he declared that "the mountains of Judea and Samaria are the rightful property of the Jewish people" and promised to promote the use of those names in official American discourse—signalling that many Republicans would bless Israel's formal annexation of the West Bank.

Legislation

Johnson shepherded HR 1, the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act", through the House in May 2025, a multitrillion-dollar bill that makes permanent Donald Trump's 2017 income-tax cuts and reshapes policy on immigration, energy, social insurance and defence spending. The bill passed with a razor-thin Republican majority. After the Senate approved its own version on July 1st 2025 with J.D. Vance casting a tie-breaking vote, Johnson convinced the House to approve the Senate's variant on July 3rd by 218 to 214, without any Democratic votes. Johnson said he is "not a big fan" of Trump's executive order to force drugmakers to match international prices.

Government shutdown

The October 2025 government shutdown was America's second-longest on record. Johnson said Republicans had done their job by passing a stop-gap bill at current spending levels; Democrats rejected it in the Senate, demanding an extension to health-care subsidies due to expire at the end of the year.

Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relative to other matter; second, telling other people to do so. -- Bertrand Russell
