Microcredit pioneer and Nobel peace laureate. Became interim leader of Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina was ousted by a massive uprising in August 2024. He set up reform commissions covering elections, the judiciary and the constitution, and produced a "July Charter" enabling elections. His caretaker government proposed constitutional reforms including a new upper house of parliament and ten-year term limits for prime ministers. He led the interim government for 18 months before handing over to the elected government of Tarique Rahman after the February 12th 2026 election, in which close to 70% of voters backed the constitutional reforms in a referendum.
