Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a general in the Ugandan army and the son of president Yoweri Museveni. He commands the army and is the most obvious successor to his father. He belongs to the Banyankore ethnic group.
On social media he has suggested hanging Kizza Besigye, threatened to kill Bobi Wine and vowed to turn the army into a "killing machine". Some of his posts boast about the Banyankore or mock the stereotypical features of the Baganda, to whom Wine belongs. Such chauvinism stokes resentment against the Banyankore and other groups from western Uganda, who are overrepresented in high office.
He has pushed aside rivals in the army; his acolytes are rising in government. Kristof Titeca of the University of Antwerp suggests Museveni might make him vice-president. After the January 2026 election he boasted that his men had killed 22 opposition supporters, a number he deemed "too low".
Cleanliness is next to impossible.
