After Komeito split from the LDP in October 2025, he called it "a once-in-a-decade chance for a change of government" and signalled a willingness to back Tamaki Yuichiro of the Democratic Party for the People as prime minister, in a potential three-party opposition coalition with the CDP, the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin) and the DPP—though no agreement was reached, as the LDP is a more natural partner for centre-right Ishin.
