America's attorney-general under Donald Trump. Before joining the administration she spent 18 years as a prosecutor in Florida and won two terms as the state's attorney-general. She served as a lawyer for Trump during his first impeachment. Trump's first choice for the post, Matt Gaetz, a congressman from Florida, withdrew just before the House Ethics Committee said it found "substantial evidence" he had committed statutory rape, an accusation he denied.
On her first day in office Bondi issued a memo demanding "zealous advocacy" to defend "the interests of the United States", declaring that those interests "are set by the nation's chief executive". She created a "Weaponisation Working Group" to investigate the special counsel who had investigated Trump and officials who investigated the January 6th 2021 Capitol attack. She has presided over the departures of many career prosecutors and shifted authority to Washington from US attorneys' offices.
Bondi started a grand-jury investigation into what Trump called treason by Barack Obama and others in his administration over the handling of Russia's interference in the 2016 election. The basis is a misrepresentation of an intelligence finding in the waning days of Obama's presidency.
In March 2026 hearings began in a lawsuit by state attorneys-general challenging the DoJ's settlement of the HPE-Juniper merger. Sworn testimony alleged that MAGA-connected lobbyists—including Mike Davis, William Levi and Arthur Schwartz—negotiated settlements with the DoJ on behalf of merging companies, bypassing Gail Slater, then head of the antitrust division, who was reportedly forced out. The lobbyists allegedly turned to Chad Mizelle, Bondi's chief of staff, when Slater's team resisted. Slater and her deputies were sidelined; two were later sacked. Several mega-mergers—including Compass-Anywhere Real Estate, Capital One-Discover and Live Nation—were waved through during this period. The Tunney Act of 1974, which requires the government to explain why a merger settlement serves the public interest and mandates disclosure of all contact with the executive branch, is the legal basis for the challenge.
In February 2025 she claimed to have Jeffrey Epstein's client list "sitting on my desk right now" and invited MAGA social-media influencers to the White House to receive "The Epstein Files: Phase 1", though little in the documents was new. She subsequently blamed the FBI for withholding documents and spoke of a previously unheard-of stash of "tens of thousands of videos". On July 7th 2025 the Department of Justice said there was no secret information to release and that Epstein had killed himself, contradicting the cover-up narrative Bondi had promoted.
