Governor of China's central bank, the People's Bank of China. In a speech in June 2025 he declared that the global financial system was becoming "multipolar" and that the dollar would in future be forced to compete with other currencies, including the yuan. He argued that such competition meant China would have to do less to reduce its dollar dependence and could resist liberalising capital flows and the exchange rate.
