Donald Trump's "special envoy for special missions". Grenell led talks with Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and is said to favour diplomacy over military action. He was overridden by Marco Rubio, who pushed a harder line. Trump ordered Grenell to break off all contact with Caracas in October 2025 after Mr Maduro's attempt to offer America a large stake in Venezuela's oil and mineral wealth was rebuffed.
In early 2025 Trump appointed Grenell president of the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, after purging the old trustees and renaming it "The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Centre for the Performing Arts".
