Riek Machar is the vice-president of South Sudan and longtime rival of president Salva Kiir. He is a Nuer; Kiir is a Dinka. A civil war between their factions cost perhaps 400,000 lives between 2013 and 2018. A unity government was formed in 2020 as part of a peace agreement between them, but Kiir refused to implement key terms. In March 2025 Kiir used clashes between the army and Nuer militias linked to Machar as a pretext to arrest him. In September 2025 he was charged with murder, treason and crimes against humanity. His allies are mostly scattered abroad. His deputy is Nathaniel Oyet, who says all the opposition wants is a "mediated solution" and a return to the peace deal.
