Oppenheimer led the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico, from 1943. He called the atomic bomb "the gadget". In July 1945, two months after Germany's surrender, the team detonated the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert. America dropped one on Hiroshima on August 6th 1945 and another on Nagasaki three days later. The two bombs killed around 200,000 people by the end of 1945, many from burns and radiation. Japan surrendered on August 15th.
