Rosario Murillo is the "co-president" of Nicaragua alongside her husband, Daniel Ortega. She had previously served as his vice-president before a 2024 constitutional overhaul elevated her to co-president, paving the way for her to succeed Mr Ortega.
Ms Murillo has published multiple volumes of poetry. She is widely disliked and seen as divisive within the regime, in part because of her belief in mysticism and a vengeful streak. Many were appalled after she sided with her husband when her daughter from a previous marriage accused him of raping her.
She has taken control of the ruling duo and repression has increased under her direction.
