Thomas Massie

Republican congressman from Kentucky's fourth district and a libertarian-leaning conservative. Born around 1971 in Lewis County, Kentucky, where his family has lived for generations. His grandfather was a "serial entrepreneur"—a beer distributor, truck salesman and builder of the local post office and courthouse.

Early life and education

Massie grew up in Vanceburg, a small town in Lewis County, one of the poorest counties in Kentucky. He was an avid tinkerer from childhood, filling his bedroom with components scavenged from household appliances. After watching "Star Wars" in seventh grade he built a robot arm from junk, which won him prizes and trips to science fairs in California and Texas. He excelled academically: his chemistry teacher described him as a "genius" without arrogance, and on the school quiz team his quick recall in maths was said to be "astounding".

In 1989 Massie enrolled at MIT to study engineering—"pretty much unheard of" for students from his school to attend university out of state. He thrived there, calling it "nerd paradise". As a senior he built the Phantom, a haptic stylus connected to a mechanical arm that simulated the sensation of touching 3D objects on a computer screen. It is widely regarded as a milestone in the development of computer haptics.

SensAble Technologies

In 1993 Massie and his first wife Rhonda launched SensAble Technologies to manufacture and sell the Phantom. Clients included Boeing, Walt Disney and the Mayo Clinic. The company grew from two employees to 70, raised over $32m in venture capital, and saw revenue grow 25 times between 1994 and 1999. Massie left SensAble in 2003 after disagreements with colleagues over the company's direction.

Return to Kentucky

After leaving SensAble, Massie and Rhonda moved to a 1,500-acre farm in Lewis County to raise their four children. He built a four-storey timber-frame house from scratch, quarrying sandstone and harvesting oak and hickory from the land—despite never having built anything bigger than a treehouse. He lives off-grid: solar panels and a salvaged Tesla battery power the house; water comes from a pond and a well he dug himself.

Political career

In 2010 Massie was elected judge executive of Lewis County on a small-government platform. He renegotiated contracts, axed county jobs and privatised rubbish collection, claiming he covered his entire salary with the waste he found. In 2012, during the Tea Party's ascendancy, he won election to Congress in a seven-way primary with 45% of the vote. He has won every subsequent primary by more than 75%. His seat was so safe that he was not even challenged by a Democrat in 2024.

On Capitol Hill Massie formed a close alliance with Kentucky senator Rand Paul; the pair were described as a "fuck you caucus". Massie acquired the nickname "Mr No" for voting against legislation so frequently. He introduced legislation to reduce some federal prison sentences and tried to repeal the Patriot Act. He is anti-abortion, pro-gun and an isolationist who wants America to leave NATO. He once posted a Christmas photo of his family posing with military-style rifles days after a school shooting.

In spring 2020 Massie single-handedly forced the House to hold a recorded vote on a $2.2trn covid-relief bill by objecting to passage by unanimous consent. CNN branded him "the most hated person in Washington, DC". He won his next primary by 81 points regardless.

Epstein Files Transparency Act

In November 2025 Massie co-authored legislation with Democratic congressman Ro Khanna compelling the Department of Justice to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein. The White House tried to thwart the effort: two of Massie's staffers were offered other jobs, and Republican leaders sought to prevent the bill reaching a vote. Massie forced it to the floor through a discharge petition, recruiting Republican congresswomen Marjorie Taylor Greene, Nancy Mace and Lauren Boebert—he named a group text with the trio "Bravehearts". A poll showed 67% of Republican voters supported the release. Donald Trump dropped his opposition and the legislation passed the House 427 to 1 on November 18th 2025.

Defying Trump

Massie voted against the government shutdown deal in November 2025 and against the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—one of just two Republicans to do so in each case. He tried to revoke Trump's tariffs on Canada and to block America from attacking Venezuela and Iran without congressional approval. He described the Iran war as unconstitutional.

In the summer of 2025 Trump tasked two advisers with finding a primary challenger for Massie. They chose Ed Gallrein, a Kentucky farmer and retired Navy SEAL. On March 11th 2026 Trump rallied in Massie's district, calling Massie "disloyal to the United States of America". Each side spent more than $3m on advertising. Massie's donors include libertarian businessman Jeff Yass; Gallrein's include hedge-fund managers Paul Singer and John Paulson and casino magnate Miriam Adelson. The primary is scheduled for May 19th 2026.

Personal life

Massie married his high-school sweetheart Rhonda, who also studied engineering at MIT. She died in 2024. He married his second wife Carolyn, a former staffer for Rand Paul, in October 2025. He plays bluegrass banjo and attributes a recent "glow-up" (one colleague dubbed him "the sexiest man in Congress") to a diet of raw milk, red meat and fresh vegetables.
