The first Chinese woman to win a Nobel prize. In the 1970s she extracted artemisinin from the leaves of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), a compound that proved powerfully effective against malaria. Chinese traditional medicine had long used the dried leaves, served as tea, to lower fevers and clear the blood. The discovery of artemisinin led to artemisinin combination therapy (ACT), developed by Nick White and his colleagues, which became the WHO-recommended first-line treatment for non-severe malaria.
