Tundu Lissu is a Tanzanian opposition leader and head of Chadema, the main opposition party. He was jailed and put on trial for treason ahead of the October 2025 election and called for a boycott under the slogan "no reforms, no election". His party was barred from competing by the electoral commission. After Samia Suluhu Hassan claimed 98% of the vote, the largest protests in Tanzania's history erupted, followed by a crackdown that killed many hundreds. Before the violence Lissu had been expected to be released after the vote, perhaps with a conviction barring him from standing for office, but the fear the uprising instilled in the regime may make it wary of releasing him. As of May 2026 he remains jailed on trumped-up treason charges.
