Vipin Narang is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as head of nuclear, space and missile-defence strategy in the Biden-era Pentagon. He has warned that the distinction between American nuclear strategy and allied conventional defence is false: "There is not a war between NATO and Russia that does not touch on US vital national interests." Pushing Europeans to buy potent conventional weapons capable of striking Moscow, he argued, could lead America to find it has written "escalation cheques" that it has to honour.
