Yvette Cooper

Yvette Cooper is Britain's foreign secretary under Keir Starmer. She previously served as home secretary until a cabinet reshuffle on September 5th 2025, in which she was tasked with maintaining cordial relations with Donald Trump's government.

As home secretary

Ms Cooper published a national audit of grooming gangs, led by Louise Casey, which pinned the blame on authorities that failed to see "girls as girls" and "shied away from" investigating crimes committed by minorities. She announced that the National Crime Agency would take over hundreds of cold cases and called a public inquiry into grooming gangs, after initially resisting one.

She proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation—the first time Britain's anti-terror laws have been used against a group that primarily targets property rather than people.

Ms Cooper changed the law to prevent rapists from escaping with lesser charges by claiming that 13- to 15-year-olds had "consented" to sex.

On immigration, she adopted a low-key approach, focusing on building coalitions with continental countries and joint police work against smugglers. She negotiated a "one in, one out" arrangement with France, under which some channel crossers would be sent back in exchange for Britain letting in the same number to apply for asylum.
