The Paris agreement is a 2015 international climate treaty in which 195 countries committed to limit global heating, protect the most vulnerable and pursue an economic transformation away from fossil fuels. The negotiations were led by Christiana Figueres, then executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
At the time the agreement was struck, global CO₂ emissions were rising by almost 2% per year and the world was on course for about 4°C of warming by 2100. By 2025, emissions growth had slowed to 0.3% and warming projections had fallen to around 2.6°C.
