Maia Sandu is the president of Moldova, serving a second term after winning re-election in November 2024 with 55% of the vote. She leads the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).
Before becoming president, Ms Sandu was an anti-corruption campaigner and opposition leader who waged a struggle against the oligarchs Vlad Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor. Under her presidency Moldova opened EU accession negotiations in 2024.
In parliamentary elections on September 28th 2025, PAS won 50.2% of the votes despite extensive Russian interference—the Kremlin is alleged to have spent $200m, equivalent to 1% of Moldova's GDP, on disinformation and bribing voters. PAS promises to take Moldova into the EU as soon as 2028. Ms Sandu has complained that judicial reform faces huge resistance, saying judges and prosecutors "have to prove that they have no integrity issues".
