Mamady Doumbouya is a Guinean military officer who seized the presidency of Guinea in a coup in 2021. His chief of staff is Djiba Diakité. Despite promising to leave power, Doumbouya stood in a presidential election on December 28th 2025 after excluding opposition parties from the ballot and cracking down on the press. An electoral mandate is intended to quell would-be challengers within the armed forces.
Doumbouya's grip on power is bolstered by the Simandou iron-ore mine, which shipped its first ore in December 2025. His government has branded the mine's revenues as the centrepiece of its development agenda, with posters advertising "Simandou 2040" plastered across Conakry ahead of the election.
