He welcomed Donald Trump's proposal for broader talks covering Kashmir, the suspended Indus Water Treaty, and Pakistan's allegations that India backs insurgencies on Pakistani soil.
During Operation Righteous Fury in February 2026, when Pakistan bombed Kabul and Kandahar in retaliation for Afghan Taliban support of TTP militants, Sharif boasted that Pakistan can "crush any aggressor." His defence minister, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, declared "open war" with Afghanistan.
Sharif received then-president Ebrahim Raisi of Iran in Islamabad in 2024, helping to rebuild trust after the two countries exchanged missile strikes. In the 2026 Gulf war he and Asim Munir emerged as key mediators between America and Iran. Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, credited the April 8th 2026 ceasefire to the "tireless efforts of Sharif and Munir".
