The most wanted man in Myanmar. A wiry and bespectacled doctor, he led the first protest against the military junta that toppled Myanmar's democratically elected government in 2021. In the years since then he has avoided capture, aided by a supportive population, popping up in settlements across the country to lead demonstrations against the junta. In early December 2025 he appeared in a market in Mandalay, right by a military headquarters, to protest against the regime's sham election—one of his most daring appearances yet. Delighted locals applauded and flashed the three-finger salute, a symbol of opposition to military rule, before he slipped back into the shadows. He and his fellow revolutionaries reject the idea that a sham election will change anything; after five years of marching and fighting, they are holding out for a real one.
